I have finally got up to facebook, I was a little unsure about doing this one, I have real privacy issues with it, but I understand the concept of how people can communicate, gone are the days of talking face to face with people or writing letters to overseas or interstate friends (which I still do.) and the majority of my friends also letter write, but I can see that facebook can be good for some people who want the world to know what they are doing in there lives, and it could be good for libraries, to let the world know what happening library world and things taht are happen in your library, but you can also do this in other way, I think that facebook takes out the customer service aspect of librarys and if you dont have a computer then you could be in real trouble.
I have now got brave and opened up my own personal Facebook, but I am still not really sure how much I will use it and I find it difficult to let people know my business. I spend very little time on my computer at home anyway. I would rather go and chat or drop in on friends and continue to write letters. I know this is old fashioned, but I am quite a private person with very little friends anyway so this suits me, I am also add my own personal touches to the letters some of which I dont think I could put on facebook.
Facebook, just like email (something else I really dont like) can be interperted in different ways what you write might offend someone with out meaning to. Thats just technology for you.

I'm glad that through exploring Facebook more you have been able to rationalise some of the fears that you had about privacy, etc. It's a great example of how learning a little bit about the technology can mean that you better protect yourself against potential problems!
ReplyDeleteYou will get the hang of facebook so "they" tell me, so keep plugging away.
